Echinococcosis - Also called
ECHINOCOCCAL DISEASE, HYDATIDOSIS, OR
HYDATID DISEASE, formation of cysts, or hydatids, at the site of
infestation by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus, a tapeworm
common in sheep, cattle, camels, dogs, and many other mammals.
Filariasis - A
tropical disease caused by the presence of filarial worms, especially in the
lymph vessels where heavy infestation can result in elephantiasis.
Giardiasis - Infection
of the intestine with a flagellate protozoan, which causes diarrhoea and other
symptoms.
Hookworm Infections
- Infection begins when the worm is in the larval stage. It penetrates the skin,
usually of the feet, and migrates during its life cycle through the liver and
the lungs, and it attaches to the mucosa of the small intestine where it
matures. Hookworms deplete the body of nutrients, and a major effect is severe
chronic iron-deficiency anemia.

Leishmaniasis - A
tropical and subtropical disease caused by leishmania and transmitted by the
bite of sandflies. It affects either the skin or the internal organs.
Loiasis - African disease caused by infestation with eye worms, which cause
transient subcutaneous swellings, often accompanied by pain or fever.
Malaria - An
intermittent and remittent fever caused by a protozoan parasite which invades
the red blood cells and is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Onchocerciasis - Infestation
with the roundworm Onchocerca volvulus, occasionally results in blindness

Pin Worms
Myiasis - Infestation of the body with the larvae (maggots) of certain species
of flies. Intestinal myiasis results from ingestion of food contaminated with
eggs or larvae and may produce cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Scabies - A
contagious skin disease marked by itching and small raised red spots, caused by
the itch mite.
Schistosomiasis - A
chronic disease caused by infestation with blood flukes (schistosomes). Also
called bilharziasis.

Toxoplasmosis - A
disease caused by toxoplasmas, transmitted chiefly through undercooked meat,
soil, or in cat faeces. Symptoms of infection generally pass unremarked in
adults, but can be dangerous to unborn children.

disease caused by trichinae, typically from infected meat, characterized by
digestive disturbance, fever, and muscular rigidity.
Trypanosomiasis - Any
tropical disease caused by trypanosomes and typically transmitted by biting
insects, especially sleeping sickness and Chagas' disease.
Whipworm Infections
- Infestation in humans, particularly in children, occurs through the ingestion
of contaminated soil.
