Dracunculiasis

Echinococcosis - Also called ECHINOCOCCAL DISEASE, HYDATIDOSIS, OR HYDATID DISEASE, formation of cysts, or hydatids, at the site of infestation by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus, a tapeworm common in sheep, cattle, camels, dogs, and many other mammals.

Filariasis - A tropical disease caused by the presence of filarial worms, especially in the lymph vessels where heavy infestation can result in elephantiasis.

Giardiasis - Infection of the intestine with a flagellate protozoan, which causes diarrhoea and other symptoms.

Hookworm Infections - Infection begins when the worm is in the larval stage. It penetrates the skin, usually of the feet, and migrates during its life cycle through the liver and the lungs, and it attaches to the mucosa of the small intestine where it matures. Hookworms deplete the body of nutrients, and a major effect is severe chronic iron-deficiency anemia.

Larva Migrans

Leishmaniasis - A tropical and subtropical disease caused by leishmania and transmitted by the bite of sandflies. It affects either the skin or the internal organs.

Loiasis - African disease caused by infestation with eye worms, which cause transient subcutaneous swellings, often accompanied by pain or fever.

Malaria - An intermittent and remittent fever caused by a protozoan parasite which invades the red blood cells and is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Mite Infestations

Neurocysticercosis (--> Cysticercosis)

Onchocerciasis - Infestation with the roundworm Onchocerca volvulus, occasionally results in blindness if the worms invade the eyes.

Pediculosis - Infestation with lice.

Pin Worms

Myiasis - Infestation of the body with the larvae (maggots) of certain species of flies. Intestinal myiasis results from ingestion of food contaminated with eggs or larvae and may produce cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Scabies - A contagious skin disease marked by itching and small raised red spots, caused by the itch mite.

Schistosomiasis - A chronic disease caused by infestation with blood flukes (schistosomes). Also called bilharziasis.

Trichinosis - A disease caused by trichinae, typically from infected meat, characterized by digestive disturbance, fever, and muscular rigidity.

Trypanosomiasis - Any tropical disease caused by trypanosomes and typically transmitted by biting insects, especially sleeping sickness and Chagas' disease.

Whipworm Infections - Infestation in humans, particularly in children, occurs through the ingestion of contaminated soil.
