Cholesteatoma, Middle Ear - An
ingrowth of skin from the outer-ear canal that forms a cyst within the middle
ear. An infected cholesteatoma cyst enlarges slowly but progressively, gradually
eroding the bone until the cyst reaches the brain cavity, the nerve that
supplies the muscles of the face, or a semicircular canal of the inner ear. The
infected material within the cyst then produces a serious complication:
meningitis or brain abscess, paralysis of the facial nerve, or infection of the
labyrinth of the inner ear with vertigo, all of which may lead to total
deafness.
Croup -

infection and causing breathing difficulties.
