Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's constituency records lowest voter turnout -
only 35.43 per cent
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been asking people in his campaign across the country to cast their franchise but his own Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency recorded a poor voter turn out of 35.43 per cent in Wednesday's polling.
Figures released by the election office on Friday revealed that the voting percentage remained at 35.42 and not 43 as announced by the district administration earlier.
This is the lowest voter turnout in the 62 constituencies where elections have been held so far in Uttar Pradesh in the two rounds of polling.
The BJP had expected a huge turnout in the State capital, especially after the Prime Minister himself made repeated appeals to the electorate to exercise their franchise .
Only 5,80,665 of the 16,39,371 voters in the Lucknow parliamentary seat exercised their franchise in the Wednesday's polling, sources said, adding earlier the district magistrate had declared 43 per cent polling on the basis of reports obtained on phone from respective police officials.
The lowest turnout was recorded in Lucknow (West) assembly segment represented by senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon. Only 32.93 per cent voters exercised their franchise in this Muslim-dominated constituency.

The vote of Union Minister C P Thakur was cancelled today on the ground of breach of secrecy, election office sources said.
Thakur's wife and a few of his supporters were standing by his side when he pressed the button on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at a booth on Fraser Road here, they said.
According to the election rules, only the voter should be present in the enclosure while casting his vote unless he is infirm.
Thakur is locked in a direct contest with RJD's Ramkripal Yadav for the Patna Lok Sabha seat.

The polling booth in Barh where
Railway Minister and JD-U leader Mr Nitish Kumar cast his vote had no electricity,
any furnitures and the voting was done in candlelight.
Coming out of the booth after casting vote, Mr Kumar took a dig at the state government saying it symbolised the progress made by Bihar under the RJD regime.
