We've all heard
that the most efficient way to move forward in life is to work
on attainable goals toward a vision. While part of
maintain a fulfilling life involves moving forward toward our
ultimate objectives, it is also necessary to slow down enough
to make sure we're going the right way. We're sometimes
so focused on the idea of "forward momentum" that we
can forget where we are, where we're going, and end up missing
the "turnoff".
--- Headin' Down the Highway ---
Many of my clients are those just coming out of some sort of
"rut
entrenching" experience. These experiences range
from general stagnation, career rut, and post-success syndrome
to the after-effects of trauma. However, in all cases,
they hit a point where they can't move forward and don't want
to go back, so they meander around in a "safe
circle" that they've created for themselves.
Generally, this circle provides protection and a calming place
for them to regroup. However, the downside is that it is
far too easy to remain stuck in this place and forget how to
get out. That's where we sit down and devise a mission
to reach their vision. Of course, in the early stages,
it's a slow process, but over time, they begin moving along at
a rather rapid clip!
--- Was that the exit? ---
Once we get moving on our way, we occasionally lose site of
where we're heading. We begin down our paths to our
visions, accomplishing goals left and right, but all of the
sudden, we forget why we're doing all of this. It's a
common problem that we all experience from time to time.
However, there are a couple of simple reasons why this
happens.
The first is that, as we're heading down our paths, we change
our mind.
Movement and success breeds growth and maturity. As we
grow, we find that the things we once wanted are no longer as
important as when we first came up with the idea to pursue
them. It is essential that we pursue those things that
we feel are important now, but they will change over time.
However, don't quit! Just change the vision and change
direction, but don't fall back into your safe circle!
The second reason is intense concentration. We become so
engrossed in accomplishing goals and performing tasks that we
lose sight of the overall objective. The problem that
usually results is that, once we've accomplished the goals to
get us to our desired destination, we simply continue working
on these small tasks and miss the actual "turn off of the
highway". We get caught up in the idea of
working toward a vision and don't even realize that we made
it! Stay focused, but take a look
around once in a while. Take the time to enjoy the
journey!
--- What's next? ---
Sometimes, in the frenzy of life and the momentum to achieve,
we must all simply "take a break". We have to
take the time to evaluate where we've been and where we are in
order to gauge our general vicinity to our ultimate vision.
Once you take the time to look around, you might be surprised
that you are already living your dream.
